Special features of drooping eyelid correction
They make the eyes look tired and, in severe cases, can also reduce the field of vision. We can do something about this!
Important factors in drooping eyelid removal
Do you think drooping eyelids describe excess skin on the upper eyelid? That is not quite correct.
Excess skin is only partly responsible for drooping eyelids and it is not always just a cosmetic problem!
The following factors must be taken into account when removing drooping eyelids surgically:
The excess skin
In extreme cases, it can reach up to the lash line.
Excess muscle
There is usually also excess muscle. The eye ring muscle, which is used to pinch the eye shut, is regularly slack in the drooping eyelid.
The fatty tissue
The fatty tissue, which is located in the eye socket, shifts outwards. This is possible due to the slackening of the fibrous tissue. The fatty tissue tends to fill with water (edema) when lying down and leads to swelling of the drooping eyelids, especially in the morning.
The lacrimal gland
In rare cases, it can protrude and slide downwards due to sagging connective tissue. This can make the drooping eyelids appear swollen at the top and outside.
Frequently asked questions about drooping eyelids
How does upper eyelid correction work to remove drooping eyelids?
If non-surgical measures do not work, the main reason is certainly not eyelid swelling or eyelid edema, but rather the anatomical conditions.
In these cases, an upper eyelid lift to correct drooping eyelids is the method of choice.
What complaints are typical with drooping eyelids?
Drooping eyelids are generally an aesthetic problem.
In extremely pronounced cases, however, additional symptoms may occur that make surgical removal of the drooping eyelids appear sensible:
Visual field restriction
If the upper eyelids extend to the edge of the eyelashes or even beyond, the field of vision (usually at the top outside) may be restricted.
Fatigue of the eyelids
The weight of the eyelids resting on the eyelashes can cause the delicate eyelid lifting muscle to tire more quickly. When patients want to read or watch television in the early evening, their eyelids literally fall shut.
Eyelid swelling
They can be caused by poor lifestyle habits or general illnesses. However, they are often hereditary or caused by the ageing process.
How is aftercare carried out for upper eyelid surgery?
After drooping eyelid removal, we apply the finest skin-colored plasters to the upper eyelid. This plaster remains in place until approximately 1 week after the eyelid correction, i.e. until the stitches are removed.
Cooling the eye
Cooling the eyelids is important for the first few days. However, excessive cooling after an eyelid lift can also lead to irritation of the conjunctiva and even frostbite. Pure ice should never be used!
Sleeping position
Sleeping with your upper body elevated reduces swelling.
Reduce swelling
Decongestant measures can be started before the operation and continued after the eyelid surgery to significantly reduce swelling.
Eye ointments
They reduce the risk of conjunctival irritation.
No eye rubbing
Even after the suture material has been removed, the eye should not be rubbed, as the scars only heal from the third week after removal of the drooping eyelid. If the wound should nevertheless reopen in one place due to rubbing, we can prevent unsightly scar healing and a long swelling period with prompt suturing.
What are the expected costs of eyelid correction?
The costs of eyelid correction vary in Germany. They depend on the extent of the operation, the length of the hospital stay, the anesthetic and the plastic surgeon’s fee.
In general, the upper eyelid correction is the most expensive, lower eyelid correction the second most expensive and combined eyelid surgery the most expensive.
Upper eyelid correction
In addition to the costs of an upper eyelid correction in Germany, there may also be costs for a sedation anaesthetic. The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
