Special features of chin correction
During chin surgery, we pay particular attention to whether there is an additional malocclusion, which should be treated in collaboration with orthodontists.
Reasons for chin surgery
The following reasons may play a role in the desire for an aesthetic or medical chin correction:
Flying chin (microgenia):
The aim here is to enlarge the chin through correction. We most frequently use chin implants for this purpose. However, positive results can also be achieved without surgery at our clinic in Düsseldorf, as our team will explain to you.
Protruding chin (progenia):
Chin reduction is also possible. There is a greater demand among women to feminize a protruding, masculine-looking chin.
A large and angular chin can be a challenge, especially if you want to look more feminine. With the help of chin reduction, your facial proportions can be harmonized.
If it is not so much the pronounced bone structure, but rather fat deposits that cause a double chin, we can effectively counteract this with liposuction.
malocclusion (so-called occlusal disorders):
This is a medical treatment that is covered by health insurance. Both malformations, the receding chin (microgenia) and the protruding chin (progenia), can be accompanied by a malocclusion. Simply correcting the chin without orthodontic correction of the tooth position is not appropriate here. It is not uncommon for the entire lower jaw to need to be corrected.
Frequently asked questions about chin surgery
How is chin reduction surgery performed at the Yuveo Clinic in Düsseldorf?
Chin reduction is performed under general anesthesia at the Yuveo Clinic Düsseldorf. The procedure is performed through the oral cavity, so we can avoid visible scars.
If the chin is moderately pronounced, we can grind down and shape part of the bone with a bone cutter. If the chin is larger and more angular, we saw out part of the lower jaw bone. Depending on the findings, the protruding chin is then moved backwards and we stabilize the remaining bone with titanium plates during the healing phase.
For more extensive chin reductions, a hospital stay of 1 to 2 days may make sense. Cooling compresses and elevation of the upper body while sleeping can be helpful against swelling of the chin.
The chin is stabilized with a bandage for up to 14 days. If we operate via the oral cavity, we use self-dissolving sutures, so there is no need to remove stitches.
After the swelling in the chin area has subsided, the result is visible after 4 to 6 weeks. The final result is visible after approx. 9 months.
Of course, we will inform you in advance about possible risks or complications. The treatment procedure will be explained to you in detail and the costs will be presented transparently. You are welcome to arrange a personal consultation with us.
What should you know before chin reduction?
Our plastic surgeons use appropriate surgical techniques to transform the large, angular chin into a chin that generally appears more pointed and triangular.
By grinding down the jaw angle, we also reduce the bone volume and feminize the lateral facial profile.
Can a chin correction be performed without surgery at the Yuveo Clinic in Düsseldorf?
We usually perform chin augmentation without surgery using hyaluronic acid, but we also use other filling materials. The result is visible immediately after treatment. However, the durability is limited.
A thicker version of the filler is used than the one used for wrinkle injections. We inject the material directly into the bone and mold it in place.
Depending on the preparation, the result of the treatment is maintained for approx. 1 year. After that, it must be injected again.
Compared to wrinkle treatment, e.g. nasolabial folds, our doctors have to inject larger amounts of filler to achieve an improvement.
Chin correction with hyaluronic acid can also be a good method for our patients to ‘try out’. If you are happy with the change, we can later perform a permanent chin correction using a chin implant.
However, our plastic surgery team in Düsseldorf can use this filler to do more than just fill out the chin. Shaping is also possible, which we can use to reduce asymmetries or other irregularities.
Can the chin be enlarged with implants?
If a permanent result is desired, our Düsseldorf team of plastic surgeons will advise you on chin augmentation with a chin implant.
This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with twilight sleep or under general anesthesia.
An inpatient stay is not absolutely necessary.
The cost of this treatment varies depending on the choice of anesthesia method, among other things.
What does the aftercare for chin correction in Düsseldorf look like?
The aftercare at the Yuveo Clinic in Düsseldorf is simplified here due to the different cases and procedures of chin surgery.
Hyaluronic acid
- For chin correction with hyaluronic acid, we recommend that you cool your face on the day of the procedure and take it easy physically. If the treated areas of the chin are massaged in the first 1 to 2 weeks, the material can be ‘pushed away’. So be careful!
Operation
- After the procedure in our clinic, we will provide you with a special dressing on your chin.
- We recommend that you: Cooling and protecting the mimic muscles (speaking, eating). This has a beneficial effect.
- A slow build-up of food improves wound healing: liquid – porridge – light food – normal food.
- We can remove the stitches after approx. 7 to 10 days in our clinic in Düsseldorf.
