Our primary goal is to leave as few and inconspicuous scars as possible. Low-scar procedures are therefore a priority. During a breast lift, we remove as little tissue as possible, as the volume of your breast should not be reduced. The superficial layer of skin is removed by plastic surgery. We leave the deep skin layer (dermis) as it contributes to the volume. This allows us to preserve a maximum amount of tissue. The push-up effect after the breast lift often gives you the feeling of having more fullness.

Breast lift with scarring around the areola.

In the case of mild breast sagging in small to medium-sized breasts, we can use the least scarring breast lift.

We mark and trim the areola depending on the desired size. We then mark the estimated excess skin and remove the superficial layer of skin between the markings. Finally, we suture using a multi-layer technique.

The advantage of this procedure is that the breast correction can be performed under local anesthesia with little effort and, if necessary, with twilight sleep, leaving only a fine scar around the nipples. The result is a small to medium tightening effect.

Breast correction with the i-incision: additional scar on the bridge

Another breast lift procedure we can use is the i-incision. The resulting scar runs in a circle around the areola and then extends vertically into the underbust crease. The distance from the nipple to the underbust crease is quite large. However, we can shorten it by means of skin tightening.

The L-cut is similar to the i-cut. To slightly reduce the remaining excess skin in the horizontal direction, we cut outwards in an L-shape.

A breast lift in the case of severe breast sagging in large breasts can only be performed with a T-incision with satisfactory results. The scar runs horizontally in the underbust crease as with the i-incision, i.e. like an upside-down ‘T’. In order to maintain the effect of the breast lift for longer and give your breasts more stability, we can create one or more flaps from the deep skin layer and/or the fatty tissue and mammary gland tissue at Düsseldorf Plastic Surgery. These flaps are anchored to the pectoral muscle or to a firm fibrous layer in the fatty tissue with sutures. It is also possible to shape the breasts. These anchors also provide stability through the resulting internal scars and then function like the body’s own bra.

• Drains: Drains are often not used for a small breast lift. For a T-breast lift, we usually insert two Redon suction drains, which are left in place for 1-5 days.
• Compression: A compression bandage for the first night reduces the risk of post-operative bleeding.
• Exercise: It is particularly important to take it easy in the first 24 hours after a breast lift. Too much movement and excitement (increase in blood pressure) can lead to small obliterated vessels reopening.
• Painkillers: we will give you these for the first few days after the procedure.
• Swelling and bruising: In the first few days and weeks, some swelling and slight bruising (also on the sides) of the skin are normal findings.
• Seromas are effusions of wound fluid: The inner wound areas after a breast lift are quite large. This is particularly true after surgery on the inner bra. These wound areas can lead to the production of wound water in some patients. Occasionally, smaller seromas develop, which are broken down by the body after a certain time. The very rare larger effusions of wound fluid are punctured with a cannula if necessary.
• Showering: If you are using a waterproof dressing, e.g. in the form of foil plasters, you can shower with care after removing the drainage tubes. The dressing must remain dry beforehand.
• Skin sensation in the nipple after the breast lift: We will inform you about any deterioration or numbness of the nipples before the breast lift procedure. Deterioration of the skin sensation is less likely with a low-scar lift than with a T-lift.
• ‘Tummy tuck corner’: As described for the tummy tuck, there are also so-called tummy tuck corners for breast lifts. This refers to a point in the underbust crease where the vertical and horizontal incisions meet during a T-breast lift. Wound healing may be delayed here and the scar may be wider. If necessary, scar correction is performed under local anesthesia after 6 months, once the scars have matured.
• Stitches: Self-dissolving stitches do not need to be removed. Non-self-dissolving stitches are removed after approx. 14 days.
• Bra: Wearing a bra permanently is usually recommended for 4-6 weeks.
• Sport: After a breast lift, we recommend that you refrain from sport for 6 weeks. This applies in particular to sports that are likely to involve significant movement of the shoulder girdle and rib cage. Lighter sports can be practiced 1 to 2 weeks earlier.
• Sleeping on your stomach: Sleeping on your stomach is only permitted from the 7th week. However, it should be borne in mind that sleeping on your side can also lead to overstretching of the sutures, which has a negative effect on the final result.
