Dupuytren – History

The history of Dupuytren’s disease is closely linked to the French doctor Baron Guillaume Dupuytren . However, he was not the first to describe this deformity, but was the first to perform an operation for this condition – back in 1831.

The first descriptions of a curvature of the fingers, which correspond to today’s term, can be traced back to the Basel anatomist Felix Platter in 1614.

The first mention of it may date back to the 12th century. In the Magnus saga of Orkney in Scotland, there is a report of a finger curvature on the hand.
