Drooping eyelid – general disease

A general illness does not generally lead to the classic droopy eyelid, but can cause eyelid swelling. A distinction must be made between the two.

• Allergies usually lead to eyelid swelling in phases. If you are frequently exposed to the allergen, the eyelid can also remain chronically swollen.
• Graves’ disease of the thyroid gland leads to deposits in the fatty tissue of the eye socket. This can cause severe swelling of the eyelids.
• Kidney damage – disorders of the water balance
• Heart failure (cardiac insufficiency)
• Malnutrition
• Iron deficiency
• Conjunctivitis
• A chronic occurrence of sty, chalazion.
• Tumors are a rare cause, but should not be ignored, especially in the case of unilateral eyelid swelling.
