In the following, we describe the most important surgical consequences and complications that can occur during ear pinning:
Swelling
Moderate swelling of the ear may occur after ear pinning. Decongestant measures are helpful to minimize this. Cooling and, in particular, elevation of the upper body during sleep and appropriate decongestant medication are very helpful.
Bruising
The swelling described above after ear placement is usually accompanied by bloodshot skin. A real bruise, which lies under the subcutis, is very rare, especially with a well-fitting pressure bandage.
Bleeding
Our Düsseldorf team can prevent this by carefully stopping the bleeding and applying compression.
Skin sensitivity disorders after ear placement
A worsening of the skin sensation may occur. However, this is usually only temporary. If the bandage is too tight, it can also trigger a skin sensitivity disorder.
Scarring disorders
Ulcerated, bulging scars (or benign growths) are rare in the ear area. These can be treated with special ointments and possibly cortisone injections, among other things. If there is a family history of severe scarring, serious consideration must be given to whether ear pinning should be performed at all, depending on the severity.
Infections
Infections are extremely rare after ear pinning. If an infection is not treated in time, it can spread to the ear cartilage = chondritis.
Tearing open the wound / suture
At the Yuveo Clinic Düsseldorf, we take great care to protect the suture during ear placement. Even a small bump can tear the fine sutures. This also applies to the invisible cartilage sutures.
It is therefore safer to wear a headband for a few weeks for protection or a cap for children. The sutures are particularly easy to destroy, especially during ear reduction, and should therefore be well protected.
Cosmetically unsatisfactory result
It is important that we fully understand your expectations of the operation during the consultation and assess its feasibility. If there is dissatisfaction for surgical reasons or due to complications that have arisen, this usually means a repeat ear correction.
