There are various changes to the face that lead people to consider having facial plastic surgery.
The reasons for such changes can be due to an accident, age-related changes or of a genetic nature.
In the following, we will discuss the aesthetic corrections that can be made with the help of facial implants.
Of course, these implants can also be used for medical reasons, such as after a facial injury.
We are available to answer your questions: Dr. Schumann and Dr. Schumann-Averkiou.

Special features of facial implants
With a 2D/3D simulation, we can show you how your facial aesthetics will change after implantation.
Facial implants
Before and after simulation
The following facial implants are available:
Chin implants
We use it to correct an undershot chin. The incision can be made inside the mouth or under the chin.
Cheek implants
These are each placed through an incision inside the oral cavity in the area of the upper jawbone. The cheekbone is corrected and made more prominent with hard silicone implants. Soft silicone gel implants are used for the soft parts of the cheek, which usually have to be specially made.
Mandibular implants
In men in particular, they are used to widen a lower jaw that is too narrow and feminine-looking.
Piriformis implants
It is suitable as an implant for the nasal entrance to elevate the midface.
Eye socket rim implants
They can correct tissue loss below the eyes, which often becomes apparent with age. They are placed in the peripheral area of the lower edge of the eye socket (orbit).
Temporal implants
They conceal the often sunken temples in old age. However, the narrowing of the skull in the temple area is often congenital. Temporal implants are placed through an incision in the hairy area.
Cranial implants
(= cranial dome implants) They are rarely requested. The incision always depends on the localization and extent of the findings. These facial implants usually have to be produced using a 3D model and are therefore very expensive.
Frequently asked questions about facial implant therapy
What should you know about the preparation before the operation?
If we determine in consultation with you that your wish is sensible and feasible, the question is what type of correction you decide on.
Depending on the findings, localization and patient wishes, there are various options that we will discuss with you.
The result can be simulated using 2D or 3D graphics programs.
We decide with you whether to use prefabricated standard implants or custom-made products.
In special cases, such as with cranial dome implants, these must be produced according to a 3D image.
How is anesthesia administered for these procedures?
As far as anesthesia for the operation is concerned, general anesthesia is certainly the most pleasant form, as you don’t notice anything of the procedure. When you wake up from the anesthetic, everything is over.
Nevertheless, this operation can also be performed in twilight sleep (= sedation) or occasionally only under local anesthesia.
However, we usually recommend general anesthesia.
Can I have my face contoured with hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is one of the methods(fillers) that our plastic surgery team in Düsseldorf can use to correct facial contours without having to resort to facial implants.
We most frequently use highly cross-linked hyaluronic acids for this purpose. However, their shelf life is limited. Depending on the manufacturer and degree of cross-linking, you can expect a shelf life of 1-1.5 years.
Injections must then be repeated to maintain the result.
Hyaluronic acid is of organic origin. This is because it is present in our body and makes up a large proportion of our connective tissue, among other things.
Can the face be aesthetically shaped with autologous fat?
Another form of facial contouring without implants is autologous fat transplantation. If autologous fat is available, it can be used to contour the shape of the face, among other things. Our team requires significantly less fat for the facial treatment than for a Brazilian butt lift or breast augmentation with autologous fat, for example.
Advantages of facial implants
Sustainably beautiful result
They can be used sustainably for a long-term beautiful result. After correct insertion in the optimal position, these implants can typically remain in the body for a lifetime. As they are usually made of rubber-like hard silicone, facial implants are virtually impossible to break. In the event of accidents or severe injuries, silicone gel implants can tear and then have to be replaced. This does not happen with hard silicone implants.
Prefabricated and affordable
There are various prefabricated shapes, which makes the implants relatively inexpensive. Custom-made implants are more expensive.
No slipping
If the facial implants are ingrown under the periosteum, they can practically not slip out of place.
