The most common intimate surgery in the field of intimate surgery is labiaplasty (labia reduction).
In most cases, it refers to the reduction of the labia minora (labia minora ).
However, occasionally the outer labia are enlarged and can also undergo surgical correction (labiaplasty, labiaplasty correction) at the Yuveo Clinic Düsseldorf.
- Approximately 63% of women who undergo labiaplasty do so for functional reasons, 37% for purely aesthetic reasons.
- In a Dutch study involving almost 500 women, the following figures were recorded:
- 95% of participants examine their labia frequently.
- 43% found the appearance of the labia important.
- 95% of participants have heard of the possibility of labia reduction. 78 % have heard about it through the media.
- 7% of these women have already considered labiaplasty.
- After intimate surgery, 93% of women are satisfied with the result!

Surgery to reduce the labia minora
Intimate surgery on the labia minora
Before labia reduction, we mark the excess skin, which can vary greatly from person to person. It can extend from the anal area to the clitoris and is usually not symmetrical. Our intimate surgeons therefore plan the marking with particular care.
After anesthesia, we remove the excess mucous membrane. As the corpus cavernosum is very well supplied with blood, we ensure careful and targeted hemostasis. To do this, we use an electric knife, electric tweezers or a laser during labia reduction.
Our Düsseldorf team takes particular care not to cauterize too much tissue, as otherwise more tissue could be lost, which would make the labia too small in the end.
Finally, we suture the wounds with a self-dissolving suture. After healing, the scar is almost or no longer visible, as mucosal tissue has an extraordinary regenerative capacity. In this respect, the sutures heal practically scar-free after this intimate surgery.
Reduction of the labia minora (labia majora)
In principle, the same things described in the last paragraph about intimate surgery apply here. The difference is that the incision is made in such a way that the scar lies between the labia minora and labia majora and is therefore no longer visible.
Reduction of the labia minora is practiced much less frequently in intimate surgery than correction of the labia minora.
Frequently asked questions about labia reduction
When does labia reduction make sense?
Labiaplasty (the most common form of labiaplasty in intimate surgery) is performed if the patient has complaints or if the appearance does not meet their aesthetic expectations.
Complaints/pain
Discomfort can already occur when wearing normal underwear due to pinching. Pain can also occur when cycling or riding a motorcycle. Furthermore, discomfort during sexual intercourse (GV) is a common problem.
Aesthetics
In terms of aesthetics, more and more women find it unattractive when the inner labia protrude far beyond the outer labia. They want to hide the inner labia under the outer labia.
Study results
In a French study by Rouzier et al, the occurrence of certain complaints in labial hypertrophy (labia that are too large) was determined as follows:
- 64% of women reported discomfort when wearing the clothing.
- 26% had problems with sporting activities
- Pain during sexual intercourse occurred in 43% of cases.
What should you know about follow-up treatment at our Düsseldorf clinic?
After a labiaplasty, our team in Düsseldorf recommends that you take it easy, especially during the first 5 days. Even too much walking can lead to bleeding due to friction, or worse, to the edges of the wound coming apart.
The dressing consists of an antiseptic ointment, compresses and a sanitary napkin that can be changed if necessary and removed temporarily when going to the toilet.
The swelling after labiaplasty can be considerable. It can be reduced by taking arnica a few days before and after the intimate surgery. Chamomile sitz baths, which should be taken at least 1 to 2 times a day, can also help.
The removal of stitches is usually not necessary when using self-dissolving suture material. If we use suture material that does not dissolve, we must remove it after 1-3 weeks, depending on the type of procedure.
We use the latter for all patients who are known to have an allergic reaction to the self-dissolving material, as this can otherwise massively prolong healing and also leave more severe scars in the long term.
How is this operation performed at Intimate Surgery Düsseldorf?
No blood-thinning medication should be taken before the operation, as otherwise severe bruising and swelling can be expected. Decongestant measures can be started before the intimate surgery in order to reduce the tendency to swelling beforehand.
Labia reduction can be performed under local anesthesia. However, our intimate surgery team recommends an additional twilight sedation due to the sensitive localization. Sometimes a general anesthetic may also be advisable.
We usually perform labiaplasty on an outpatient basis at the Yuveo Clinic in Düsseldorf.
Our surgical team is of course available for you should any problems arise.
What are the costs of labia reduction in intimate surgery?
The costs of labia reduction are quite variable, even within Germany. The extent of the labia reduction and the costs for twilight sleep or general anesthesia play an important role in determining the price. A stay in hospital is usually not necessary. Finally, the costs also depend on the individual intimate surgeon.
Cost factors:
- OP
- Twilight sleep
- General anesthesia
- Hospitalization
For more detailed questions about costs, please contact your intimate surgeon. Our team in Düsseldorf is of course at your disposal in this regard.

Combination surgeries
The labia reduction can be extended by small steps if desired.
Particularly in patients who have lost a lot of weight, residual fat deposits can remain on the mons pubis, which bulge out unnaturally. For a small additional charge, we can perform liposuction of the mons pubis in combination with labia reduction.
In this context, we can also detect an excess of the clitoral hood can be corrected. This means only a small incision dilation. In our experienced hands, no loss of sensitivity is to be expected, especially as the important nerves are located far below the area being corrected. The same applies to this intimate surgery in Düsseldorf: the scars are practically invisible.
