A thorough examination and diagnosis are necessary before an eyelid correction.
Important factors to consider are the size of the excess skin, the presence of fat deposits, the quality of the skin and its natural tendency to shrink.
In addition, our Yuveo team examines the position of the eyebrows, checks whether a drooping eyelid (lid ptosis) has developed and looks to see whether the eyes are asymmetrically arranged.
All these factors are taken into account when planning the eyelid correction.
Although upper eyelid correction is one of the minor operations in plastic surgery, its effect on the eye region is usually impressive. The eyes and the entire face appear much more alert. The bedroom eyes that many patients complain about before such an operation are a thing of the past.
Combination surgery on the eyelids has several advantages!
If the eyelid lift is performed on the upper and lower eyelid in one session, the operation time is only slightly longer. The aftercare is shorter overall than with separate procedures. This means that our patients have to take less time off work.

The procedure for eyelid surgery on the upper and lower eyelid
Local anesthesia/anesthesia
Eyelid correction of the upper eyelid can be performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia. Twilight sleep (sedation) is also possible and is certainly more comfortable for most patients.
In the case of lower eyelid correction or the combination of upper and lower eyelid lifting, an additional twilight sleep is strongly recommended. In exceptional cases, it is also advisable to perform eyelid surgery under general anesthesia.
Operation time
The operation time for an upper eyelid lift is 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the findings.
At least 20 to 30 minutes more must be factored in for the lower eyelid lift. The combination of both eyelid operations takes approx. 60 to 90 minutes depending on the findings.
Frequently asked questions about eyelid correction
What should I pay particular attention to before the operation?
Before the operation, standard blood values should be determined, an ECG should be arranged if necessary and any existing secondary illnesses should be taken into account, even if the body is only exposed to a small amount of stress. Blood-thinning medication should be discontinued approx. 14 days before an eyelid correction, if there is no reason not to and the prescribing doctor agrees, in order to avoid bleeding and severe bruising. However, it must be remembered that stopping blood thinners can be life-threatening in some cases
What happens during upper eyelid correction?
The principle of upper eyelid correction is to correct the excess tissue. Part of the eyelid skin and the sagging eye ring muscle are removed as well as the bulging fatty tissue.
Correction of the eye ring muscle does not lead to any functional impairment of eyelid closure, as only a narrow strip in the direction of the muscle fibers is removed.
Furthermore, a lowered lacrimal gland can be raised again if necessary.
In some cases, it also makes sense to combine eyelid correction with an eyebrow lift. For more details, read more under upper eyelid correction.
How is lower eyelid correction performed?
Eyelid lifting of the lower eyelid is slightly different to that of the upper eyelid. As a rule, only a small amount of skin and eye ring muscles are removed and a little more fatty tissue is removed, particularly in the case of bags under the eyes. An important aspect of the lower eyelid lift is the stabilization of the lower eyelid muscle with a suture at the outer corner of the eye to prevent the lower eyelid from drooping (ectropion) after the operation.
Special variant of eyelid surgery
A special variant of eyelid lifting is the repositioning of the ‘lacrimal sac fat’. Particularly if the lower bony edge of the eye socket is clearly visible due to a loss of volume, it is advisable to move the existing fat downwards and fix it over this bony edge.
For more details, read the article Lower eyelid correction.
How is eyelid surgery performed for drooping eyelids?
As described above, eyelid ptosis is the technical term for a so-called drooping eyelid, which can be present on one or both sides. It can be congenital or acquired (e.g. due to injury).
In an eyelid correction of this clinical picture, the eyelid lifting muscle must be corrected.
In the simple case, the muscle is intact and must be tightened or its insertion relocated.
If the muscle does not function or only functions inadequately, its function is replaced with repositioning plasty.
This eyelid surgery is complex and should only be performed by experienced plastic surgeons.
