Breast a ugmentation (mammoplasty or breast augmentation) is the most frequently performed plastic surgery operation in Germany. As there are many different techniques / methods, we at the Yuveo Clinic in Düsseldorf will discuss these with you in a personal consultation and create a suitable treatment plan for you.
The operation is usually performed if the patient’s breasts are too small (micromastia). This may be due to a breast malformation. In breast augmentation for aesthetic reasons, however, there is often a disproportion between the breast size perceived as aesthetic and the actual breast volume.
At the Düsseldorf clinic, we most frequently perform breast augmentation with breast implants, as these guarantee a long-term result for our patients that is easy to plan.
However, breast augmentation without surgery can also make sense in many cases. It is therefore advisable to seek advice from our team of doctors about both methods and weigh up the pros and cons, including the risks.
A detailed explanation also includes a description of possible problems and complications that may occur after the operation in rare cases. However, these can be prevented in most cases. To avoid capsular fibrosis, which used to be quite common, we place the implants under the pectoral muscle in Düsseldorf and proceed with extreme care in terms of hygiene. Close and reliable cooperation between plastic surgeons and patients is important for good healing and a good end result. Aftercare must be optimal.

Breast augmentation: Treatments
We offer the following treatments to match the theme.
Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation procedure
Breast augmentation is always planned together with the patient, taking their wishes into account. The individual characteristics of the skin and mammary gland also play an important role here. A decision must also be made as to which breast implants (size, shape, material) are selected and in which muscle compartment they are implanted.
- We make these decisions together with you (and a relative, if applicable) in a detailed personal consultation in our Düsseldorf plastic surgery practice.
- The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 60-90 minutes, depending on the method. We recommend overnight inpatient monitoring. This is the only way to ensure adequate pain therapy and rapid action in the event of problems.
Possible incisions for breast augmentation in Düsseldorf
Cut in the underbust crease:
The incision is usually not visible when standing, but is visible close up when lying down.
The incision at the edge of the areola
Women whose areola has a relatively strong demarcation to the skin color of the breast are particularly suitable for this method, as the delicate scar is thus more difficult to see.
The underarm cut
The incision is not visible when standing or lying down as long as the arms are close to the body. When waving or lying down with the arms crossed behind the head, wearing spaghetti straps and with the arms pulled back, the incision is often visible close up. However, the higher the incision is in the armpit, the less noticeable it will be.
A combination of breast augmentation and breast lift is also possible. We will explain the appropriate incisions (areola margin, i-incision or T-incision) to you during the breast lift.
Frequently asked questions about breast augmentation
What are the most common reasons for breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is the most frequently performed breast operation and is one of the classics in plastic surgery. Here you can find out why this operation is performed at the Yuveo Clinic in Düsseldorf.
Breast asymmetry
It is also known under the medical term anisomastia. If the breasts are very uneven, this is a congenital malformation of the breast. At our clinic in Düsseldorf, we can achieve breast correction by means of a breast augmentation, breast reduction or a combination of both procedures.
Tubular breast
It is also called tubular or tubular breast. This malformation is characterized by a tubular breast shape. Tubular breasts are sometimes found together with breast asymmetry. Our plastic surgeons can achieve breast correction by means of breast augmentation with a lift around the areola or with the help of a breast lift alone.
Breast sagging
… also known as mastoptosis or mammaptosis. It occurs after severe weight loss or age-related sagging.
Depending on the findings and the patient’s wishes, we can perform a breast lift or breast augmentation or a combination of both procedures in Düsseldorf.
Breast shrinkage after pregnancy
… also known as mammary involution. After pregnancy, the mammary gland often shrinks, resulting in excess skin. Depending on the findings, our team of doctors can correct this by performing a breast lift, breast augmentation or a combination of both procedures.
If this operation is combined with others to restore the pre-pregnancy state, it is referred to as a mommy makeover.
Breast implants - which ones do we use in Düsseldorf?
Today, breast implants for breast augmentation are predominantly made of silicone and are produced by renowned manufacturers. This has proven itself as a foreign material due to its safety.
Basically, a distinction can be made between anatomical(teardrop-shaped) and round breast implants, which today generally have a rough surface. This is important for stable healing, to prevent implant rotation and in connection with capsular fibrosis.
The breast implants are available in longitudinal and transverse oval or different heights for patients with narrow or wide chests.
You can see round breast implants at the top and teardrop-shaped anatomical breast implants at different heights below.
For a woman who has extremely small breasts, a breast implant that offers more volume may be appropriate. For a woman who wants a breast augmentation from e.g. C to D, the flatter silicone implants would be more suitable.
Which implant size should I choose?
The aim of breast augmentation should be to choose an implant size that you can identify with and feel comfortable with.
You should not focus too much on specific milliliter figures or a cup size.
The frequently implanted volume of approx. 250 ml can be too little for a tall and strong woman, but far too much for a petite person. Cup sizes, on the other hand, can vary greatly between manufacturers.
In our Düsseldorf practice, trial implants of various sizes can be placed under the bra as part of the personal consultation for breast augmentation. In this way, it is usually possible to quickly determine which size is felt to be too large or too small. You can also select photos showing breasts that you like.
This allows our team of plastic surgeons in Düsseldorf to quickly get an idea of the desired breast size and to decide on the surgical procedure accordingly.
Are saline implants still used?
If patients categorically reject silicone implants, or if they want a particularly small incision, there is the option of breast correction with saline implants. However, this is rarely practiced.
Saline implants give a less favorable, more unnatural-looking shape, feel unreal, wrinkle easily(rippling) and can lead to gurgling noises if air bubbles are still trapped.
Due to the disadvantages, such implants are generally only used today for tissue stretching. This is necessary for breast reconstruction with implants after breast removal due to breast cancer, or for skin harvesting after defects in scar corrections, etc.
Today, however, the standard for breast augmentation is silicone implants, even here in Düsseldorf.
Women who decide against the insertion of implants, despite the safety of today’s breast implants, still have an option to increase the volume of their breasts. Although breast augmentation with autologous fat at our clinic in Düsseldorf has disadvantages compared to classic augmentation, it is becoming increasingly popular.
Should the breast implant be placed over or under the pectoral muscle?
Whether the implant is placed above or below the pectoral muscle during the operation depends on the patient:
- Patient request
- Weight of the patient
- Possibly also from the implant shape
Breast augmentation with implants on the pectoral muscle is suitable for women who are not too thin, as otherwise the edges of the implants may stand out unnaturally. The pain and feelings of tension after breast augmentation are less pronounced than with implantation under the muscle.
The rate of capsular fibrosis of the breast (hardening of the body’s normal envelope that forms around implants) is slightly lower when the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle.
For very slim women, the edges of the breast implants in particular are better concealed if they are placed under the breast muscle. The result looks more natural and the breast augmentation is no longer obvious. This effect can be enhanced with certain types of breast implants.
In athletes, movements of the silicone implants can become visible when the breast muscles are tensed. We can reduce the upward slippage of the implants by detaching the muscle fibers running in the lower horizontal area.
Dual plane or completely under the muscles?
Dual plane describes a position of the implants in two layers. This means that the pectoral muscle covers the upper 2/3 of the breast implants. However, the lower third does not lie under the muscle because it ends at a certain height. This technique is simple, quick and therefore widely used.
For very slim women, however, it often makes sense to also cover the lower third of the implant during breast augmentation. This is a somewhat more complex operation and takes a little longer. The implants are then completely covered by protective tissue. If you are interested in more detailed anatomy, then take a look at our pages on ‘Human musculature’.
Pictures above:
- The 1st picture shows the typical indication for breast augmentation, namely breasts that are too small, which is called micromastia in medicine.
- On the 2nd picture you can see the findings after a breast augmentation with an implant position under the pectoral muscle:
- 1, fat layer 2, large pectoral muscle 3, small pectoral muscle 4, intercostal muscles 5, rib 6, teardrop-shaped breast implant and 7, mammary gland.
- The 3rd image shows the position of the breast implant on this muscle. Here too, the implant is teardrop-shaped.
- On the 4th picture you can see a result after a breast augmentation with a round implant on the pectoral muscle. The décolleté is given more fullness, which can appear unnatural in very slim patients.
Is breast augmentation possible without surgery?
Although the new generation of breast implants are very safe and can be expected to remain in the body for a lifetime, there are some women who are strictly against artificial, non-biological materials in their own bodies. Although the operation is an absolutely standard procedure, other women are very afraid of the operation.
For such patients, the Yuveo Clinic in Düsseldorf also offers the option of breast augmentation without surgery and without implants.
What options are available for breast augmentation without surgery at the Düsseldorf clinic?
There are several ways to achieve breast augmentation without surgery.
- Weight gain – This is the easiest and most natural way of breast augmentation without surgery. However, there are many women whose breasts do not enlarge significantly despite weight gain. This is particularly true for women whose glandular percentage is significantly higher than the fat percentage of the breast.
- Muscle building – This mainly applies to men, as women usually do not want the muscular image of a man’s chest.
- During treatment with autologous fat in Düsseldorf, the fat is harvested from areas of the body with fat deposits, processed and injected into the breast. You can find out everything you need to know about the procedure in the article Breast augmentation with autologous fat.
- Breast augmentation with hyaluronic acid (Macrolane™) has no longer been possible since 2012.
Is there a breast augmentation almost without surgery using autologous fat grafting?
Breast augmentation with autologous fat does not work completely without surgery! It is only a smaller operation than breast augmentation with breast implants. The fatty tissue is obtained by liposuction from a part of the body with fat deposits, processed and injected into the breast. However, only 40-60% of the fat cells are used for fat grafting, which means that the final result is relatively difficult to calculate.
Beware of injections of dubious materials!
Only safe materials should be used for breast augmentation without surgery! Injections of silicone oil into the breast or other areas can lead to redness, inflammation with pain and migration of the material.
Unfortunately, these practices are still carried out in some countries today. In general, skepticism should be a priority with all materials that are injected and are not broken down by the body. This is because the dream of breast augmentation without surgery can quickly turn into a nightmare.
What does the aftercare of breast augmentation look like?
There are various things to consider in the aftercare after a breast augmentation at the Yuveo Clinic in Düsseldorf, as it can vary depending on the surgical technique. You will find the most important points in the following list:
- Drains
At the end of the breast augmentation, we usually insert two suction drains, which can be removed within the first 1-3 days. In some cases, no drains need to be inserted. - Compression
In the first 24 hours in particular, it is important to remain calm so that no small vessel bursts open again. We can also minimize the risk by applying a compression bandage for one night. - Swelling and bruising
In the first few days / weeks, swelling and slight bruising (also on the sides) of the skin are normal. - Numbness | numbness
… in the breast and nipple area can occur after any incision during breast augmentation. This may be more pronounced at first, but usually normalizes within a few weeks. Rarely, however, a loss of sensation may persist. - Showering
If you are using a waterproof dressing, you can shower carefully shortly after removing the drains. The dressing must remain dry beforehand. - Should the breast implant be massaged?
With today’s generation of implants, this is no longer expected to be beneficial. - Stitches
Self-dissolving stitches do not need to be removed. Otherwise, the stitches are removed after 10-14 days at our clinic in Düsseldorf. - Bra
The bra is usually recommended for 4-6 weeks - Stuttgart strap
Many surgeons use the Stuttgart strap after breast augmentation. This is placed around the ribcage in such a way that both ends (Velcro fastener) come to rest with a slight pull over the upper base of the breasts.
When wearing the Stuttgart belt, pressure from above should maintain symmetry. The strap also prevents the breast implants from shifting roughly during involuntary movements of the chest. The main aim is to prevent the silicone implants from growing in too high a position. This makes sense until the implants are firmly ingrown. The capsule that forms around each implant stabilizes, especially in the first 2 weeks after breast augmentation, as do the scars on the body. This means that we can also achieve the greatest effect with the Stuttgart strap during this phase. Most plastic surgeons recommend the Stuttgart strap for 2 weeks. However, this time can vary depending on the findings. The length of time the strap is used also depends on the position of the implants. For breast augmentation under the pectoral muscle, the strap is usually worn for a slightly longer period. - Sport
After breast augmentation at the Yuveo Clinic, sport should generally be avoided for 6 weeks. This applies in particular to sports that are likely to involve significant movement of the shoulder girdle and rib cage. Lighter sports can be practiced 1-2 weeks earlier. - Sleeping on the stomach
Sleeping on the stomach is only permitted from the 7th week at the earliest.
Even if the operation in Düsseldorf went smoothly, complications and problems can occur after the operation. This is especially true if the recommendations for post-operative treatment are not followed.

How much does a breast augmentation cost?
The costs of breast augmentation are variable. They depend on the following factors:
- Extension of the operation; additional measures such as breast lift
- Length of hospital stay in Düsseldorf
- Anesthesia costs
- finally, of course, by the plastic surgeon
Costs of a standard breast augmentation
With a normal breast augmentation, you need to pay attention to whether the breast implants are included in the price or not. There is also the anesthetic fee. In some clinics, the costs for the hospital stay are added to this.
If breast augmentation and breast lift are combined, additional costs may be incurred:
In such cases, the operating costs are higher, so that a price premium may be added.
For more details and exact costs, please ask our plastic surgeons.
