Special features of breast surgery
Breast surgery is possible and feasible for both women and men. The shaping of the breasts can be realized in a variety of ways.
Breast surgery at the Yuveo Clinic Düsseldorf
Breast correction is one of the main focuses at the YUVEO KLINIK in Düsseldorf.
If you are interested in a consultation, you can make an appointment using the contact form. During the specialist consultation, we will explain the treatment alternatives for each operation in detail. We will also take your individual patient wishes into consideration. We will also discuss any complications that may occur and ways to reduce the risks.
After the initial consultation in Düsseldorf, you can make an appointment for surgery immediately or after careful consideration. Waiting times are usually 3-6 weeks.
After an operation, we are available around the clock for questions and problems. For major operations, we recommend a general anesthetic and possibly a short inpatient stay at the YUVEO KLINIK in Düsseldorf.
Minor breast surgery can only be performed under local anesthesia, possibly with twilight sleep.
The consultation, including pre- and post-treatment, is carried out exclusively by our specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery (Dr. Schumann and Dr. Schumann-Averkiou). We are full members of the DGPRÄC (German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons).
Our patients from the surrounding area, for example from Cologne or Essen, can easily reach our clinic in 1/2 to 3/4 hour.
Frequently asked questions about breast surgery
Which breast surgeries are available for women?
Breast augmentation
Breast implants filled with leak-proof silicone gel offer you safety during this procedure. During the consultation with our team of plastic surgeons in Düsseldorf, we will discuss which shapes of breast implants are appropriate and whether they should be placed under the breast muscle or over the muscle. For women who wish to enlarge their breasts but do not want implants for various reasons, there is another option for increasing volume. Breast augmentation with autologous fat is becoming increasingly popular – also among patients who consult us.
Breast reduction
Breast reduction techniques are essentially dependent on the size of the breast. This is not always a purely cosmetic breast operation, but in some cases is covered by health insurance if the overly large breasts are clearly causing the patient discomfort and pain.
Breast lift
This operation is not only popular with older women. Younger women also often suffer from breast sagging, especially after breastfeeding or after significant weight loss.
Surgery for inverted nipples
During nipple surgery, the shortened milk ducts are cut.
Nipple reduction (nipple correction)
This is the breast correction with the least effort. It can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. This also includes areola reduction.
How does breast correction for breast cancer work?
Depending on the type and extent of the breast cancer, there are different recommendations for breast surgery in the plastic surgery clinics, ranging from sampling (biopsy or PE) to amputation with removal of lymph nodes in the armpit.
Breast biopsy
In the case of suspected cancer, it means taking tissue samples from the suspected area in the form of punches.
Breast PE (PE = specimen excision, sampling)
It corresponds to removing tissue with a knife through a usually quite small incision.
Breast-conserving surgery
The aim is to completely remove the breast cancer while preserving the female breast. Depending on the location, type and stage of the tumor in the breast, removal can be performed with a wide safety margin, removal of a segment or removal in the area of a quadrant.
Breast amputation (mastectomy)
The entire breast, including the nipple, must be removed. Although this is a breast operation that disfigures the breasts as much as possible, our Düsseldorf team is able to reconstruct them using modern plastic surgery techniques.
Removal of the axillary lymph nodes
Among other things, it is important in order to determine further therapy (chemotherapy, radiotherapy). Today, specialists no longer aim to remove the tumor as completely as possible, as post-operative problems such as lymphedema were very common.
How can the female breast be rebuilt?
Reconstruction of the female breast (breast reconstruction) is particularly important after breast cancer and is necessary for the body and lifestyle of women with the disease.
In plastic surgery, we distinguish between the following surgical procedures:
Breast reconstruction with breast implants
First, we insert an expander implant to stretch the existing skin in order to later use a final silicone breast implant.
Breast reconstruction with autologous tissue
Here we use tissue flaps from the back or abdomen with a blood supply as a donor region, which are transplanted into the breast area.
In microsurgical breast reconstruction, the patient benefits from the fact that the donor tissue with vessel (usually from the abdomen) can be completely removed and then reattached to the recipient site under a microscope (or with the help of magnifying glasses).
The most popular of these flaps is called DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator). The DIEP is one of the most demanding breast operations in plastic surgery.
What breast surgeries are available for men?
Chest of the man too large
The most common breast surgery in men is the surgical treatment of overly large breasts, i.e. gynecomastia surgery. Depending on the findings, liposuction, excision of the mammary glands, breast lift or, in extreme cases, breast reduction may be used.
Sometimes the nipples are also greatly enlarged so that they can be adjusted by nipple reduction (nipple correction).
Expansion of the chest muscles
There are also men who are not satisfied with their pectoral muscles and have breast implants inserted for this reason. These are specially designed for men and have a different shape to those for women. This type of operation is also rarely carried out because the pectoral muscle is not in place, in order to adapt the smaller side to the normal one.
Breast cancer in men
In rare cases, breast surgery may also be necessary due to breast cancer (mammary carcinoma) in men. Although this tumor is a rarity in men, it is all the more aggressive. Here, too, it is important: Early detection by doctors dramatically improves the prognosis.
How does the follow-up treatment proceed?
- We will give you painkillers for the first few days after the procedure.
- Our team in Düsseldorf recommends that you wear the Stuttgart belt for about 14 days after your breast augmentation.
- After a breast reduction, breast augmentation or breast lift, you should wear the support bra for 6 weeks.
- After surgery for gynecomastia, it is particularly important to wear the compression vest for 6 weeks.
- Please avoid sport for 6 weeks if it causes movement and strain on your chest.
