In the past, long tamponades were stuffed into the nasal cavity after septum surgery in order to press the cartilage skin and mucous membrane against the cartilage again through compression. As the nasal septum is nourished via the cartilage skin, this is an important component at the end of the operation. The pressure also prevents the formation of bruising, which would again constrict the nasal cavity and thus lead to nasal obstruction. Removing these tamponades was very painful because they were very stuck to the mucous membrane.
Fortunately, at Yuveo in Düsseldorf we now generally use smooth silicone splints, which are fixed in place with mattress stitches. Fortunately, there is no pain during removal. Depending on what is operated on the septum during rhinoplasty, the silicone splints remain in the nose for a week or longer.
