The desire to remove the nasal hump is one of the most common reasons for a nose correction. A large hump can have a negative effect on an otherwise attractive face as it cannot be hidden in the middle of the face. People from Turkish and Arab countries in particular often suffer from an overly prominent nose or nasal hump.
How can the nasal hump be removed by surgery?
The hump is caused by a bony and/or cartilaginous protrusion of the roof of the nose. If the nasal hump is only discreet, it can be removed by rasping it off with a bone rasp. However, this technique will not work miracles. If the nasal hump is not too pronounced and is rasped, the roof can also be rasped through quickly if the bone is not very thick.
The removal of a large and medium-sized nasal hump is performed with a hammer and chisel. Closed rhinoplasty may be sufficient here if there are no reasons not to do so. First, the cartilaginous roof of the nose is cut. A special chisel is then inserted into this cartilage incision and the excess bone on the nasal roof is chiseled away. After pulling out the extracted bone, the nasal roof is now open. This is called an “open roof“. To close the roof again, the lateral bone parts on the side of the nose must be moved towards the midline. This can only be done by breaking the base of this bone with another chisel. Now the two lateral pieces of bone can be folded together and the roof is closed again.
With open rhinoplasty, the whole procedure is performed under vision, which offers even more possibilities. For example, an exact correction of the tip of the nose can also be made in this way. There is also the option of lateral chiseling from the outside through the skin. This is a very precise method for removing a nasal hump. Small incisions are made in the skin from the outside using a mini chisel to break the bone and then bend it. As a result, some stability is retained shortly after the operation, as not all layers are cut through.
A nasal hump can also be removed without surgery and at a significantly reduced cost, at least in the medium term. However, this only works to a limited extent if the nose is not too large without reduction of the nose. For more information, please read the article Nose correction without surgery.
Removal of the nasal hump is almost always part of a complete nasal reduction, as in the case of so-called rhinomegaly (the large nose) all areas of the nose are usually enlarged and there is usually a hump. Even if the large nose does not have a hump, the bridge of the nose must be corrected as described, as otherwise the nasal roof cannot be reduced and the projection (protrusion of the nose from the face) of the nose does not improve.
