Removing frown lines means removing wrinkles that have formed on the face as a result of our facial expressions. These are wrinkles that form between the eyebrows. They are the result of the contraction of certain facial muscles (corrugator supercilii muscle). They are caused by a stern and angry look. The medical term is glabellar wrinkle. Excessive formation of these wrinkles is usually caused by facial expressions that are unconsciously intended to appear serious.
The eyebrows are brought together in the middle, causing the skin to wrinkle. As the facial expression with a deep frown line looks very serious and, above all, severe, many sufferers want a reduction in these wrinkles.
Prevention of frown lines
Even without medical measures, frown lines can be prevented within certain limits. These are the most important factors:
- Don’t look angry! If you manage to consciously fight the angry look, the formation of wrinkles will be reduced.
- Daily use of skin creams
- Avoiding strong sunlight: a, The sun damages the skin and leads to premature skin ageing. b, In the sun, you reflexively squint your eyes to avoid being dazzled. This also activates the muscle that forms frown lines.

Treatment via Btx
The most popular option for the treatment of frown lines is Btx treatment with Bttx. Here the frown muscle(M. corrugator supercilii) is paralyzed at 5 or more points so that it can only form a reduced frown line or none at all. The effect lasts for approx. 3-5 months, after which it must be injected again if a permanent result is desired.
The transverse fold at the root of the nose is usually also treated. This is not caused by the corrugator muscle but by the procerus muscle. In most cases, a further injection point is sufficient to achieve an adequate blockade.
Correction with fillers (e.g. hyaluronic acid) – Wrinkle injections
Frown lines can often also be treated with the help of wrinkle injections or, if they are more pronounced, at least reduce them. One of the most popular filling materials is hyaluronic acid. This is injected under the wrinkles. This lifts and smoothes the frown lines. The effect lasts for approx. 9-12 months. After that, a new wrinkle injection is necessary.
How can frown lines be removed by surgery?
In extreme cases, if neither the Btx treatment nor the wrinkle injection with a filler material is successful, surgery can be considered with the aim of removing the frown lines:
- Excision of the frown lines: Here, the frown lines are simply cut out and then meticulously sutured with fine suture material so that the resulting scar is as invisible as possible. The stitches can be removed after approx. 1 week.
- Removal of the ‘frown muscle’: It is also possible to surgically remove the muscle that is the cause of glabella wrinkling. This is often done through an incision as part of an upper eyelid correction. The small defect created by the muscle removal is often filled with a small fat graft so that no dent remains. A small branch of skin that supplies the middle area of the forehead (glabella) with skin sensation must be spared so that no numbness remains.
