Options for treating or correcting the nasolabial fold
Development of nasolabial folds
There are various causes of pronounced nasolabial folds.
- When laughing, the wrinkle deepens and thus favors its development. This is the mimic component. But not every cheerful person has a deep nasolabial fold.
- Slender people are particularly affected, as the loss of subcutaneous fatty tissue facilitates the formation of wrinkles. Patients with consumptive diseases such as cancer or HIV also frequently suffer from deep nasolabial folds.
- The third factor is the component of gravity (gravitational wrinkles). With age or after significant weight loss, the cheek tissue falls and thus reinforces the wrinkle.
Prevention of nasolabial folds
Even without medical measures, forehead wrinkles can be counteracted to a certain extent:
- Avoid extreme weight loss or weight fluctuations.
- Skin care with skin creams (daily)
- Avoid strong sunlight: The sun damages the skin and leads to premature skin ageing.
Nasolabial fold treatment with Btx?
Btx is not a sensible alternative treatment for nasolabial folds. If Btx important neighboring facial muscles would also be paralyzed. The movement of the upper lips and the lifting of the corners of the mouth would be impaired or suspended.
Correction with fillers (e.g. hyaluronic acid) – Wrinkle injections
Nasolabial folds are a classic indication for filling materials such as hyaluronic acid. Under local anesthesia or with the help of anesthetic creams, wrinkle injections can be made more comfortable. The nasolabial fold is filled with hyaluronic acid to smooth it out. The effect lasts for approx. 9 months. After that, wrinkle injections can be repeated.
Facelift
As part of a facelift, the cheek skin is pulled towards the temple/ear. This also reduces the depth of the nasolabial fold.
Excision of the nasolabial folds
Excision of the nasolabial folds is also a proven procedure that can be used in special cases. In cases of coarse-pored skin and deep wrinkles, correction by means of wrinkle injections is often frustrating. The nasolabial fold is cut out and the edges of the wound are then meticulously sutured. The scar is usually barely visible.
