The ganglion as a ganglion
Terminology:
The word ganglion is of Latin origin and means ganglion and nerve node.
Overlegs occur in the area of the joints (mainly at weak points), but can also originate in the tendon gliding tissue. They are typically cyst-like changes with a gelatinous filling substance (synovial fluid, tendon lubricant).
It often occurs in the tendons in connection with tendon sheath inflammation. In relation to the tendon sheath, it is also called tendon sheath hygroma.
The nerve node
In relation to the nerves, it is an anatomical term – not a disease. Nerve ganglia are knot-like thickenings on the nerves that house nerve cells and synapses.
Examples:
- G. stellatum (= G. cervicothoracicum)
- G. cochleare
- Ganglionitis is an inflammation of such a nerve node.
