With a combined eyelid lift, the likelihood of complications is somewhat higher than with smaller procedures, such as isolated surgery on the lower and upper eyelids. In particular, conjunctivitis or irritation can occur more frequently or be more pronounced after a combined eyelid lift.
We therefore treat directly with eye drops or eye ointments when the slightest signs become visible. Swelling and bruising are also somewhat more noticeable than with upper eyelid correction alone.
Swelling and bruising
In the first few days/weeks, swelling and slight bruising (also on the sides) of the skin are normal. With the combined tightening of the upper and lower eyelids, greater swelling must be taken into account than with the individual operations. The bruising of the skin can lead to spectacle-like discoloration, which is nothing unusual.
Skin sensitivity disorders after eyelid lifting
A deterioration in skin sensation is normal on the upper eyelid between the suture and the edge of the eyelid. Here the skin feels numb postoperatively. This usually normalizes after a few weeks to months as the small nerve endings re-sprout. Patients do not usually complain of a loss of sensation on the lower eyelid after eyelid correction.
Scarring disorders
So-called hypertrophic (bulging) scars are extremely rare but, as with all operations, can also occur as part of a combined operation. To avoid this, we will ask you about any inherited scarring disorders before the operation.
Injury to neighboring structures
With good knowledge and an experienced plastic surgeon, injuries to important structures are very unlikely, but not impossible.
Infections after blepharoplasty

Conjunctivitis
Combined eyelid correction means more trauma for the eye region than individual operations. As a result, irritation of the conjunctiva or conjunctivitis is more common. We can prevent conjunctivitis by using various eye ointments after the eyelid lift.
