What is a canthopexy or canthoplasty?
Terminology:
The word kanthopexy consists of the Greek stems kanthos (= corner of the eye) and pexis, meaning to attach.
Canthoplasty refers to shaping operations on the corners of the eyelids. This may be necessary for various eyelid diseases and malformations.
Tissue defects can often be covered with the help of canthoplasty even in the case of tumors in the area of the lid edge and near the lid edge.
This procedure is a form of canthoplasty. It involves a tightening effect in the area of the outer corner of the eyelid to stabilize the lower eyelid.
A part of the muscle(orbicularis oculi muscle) is fixed to the periosteum of the temporal bone using sutures.
This surgical technique is essential for the plastic surgeon in lower eyelid correction to prevent postoperative drooping of the lower eyelid (ectropion).
If the lower eyelid drops, tearing and conjunctivitis can occur as a result.
In cases of senile ectropion or ectropion due to injury, canthopexy is often used to fundamentally correct the drooping eyelid.
