Swelling and bruising after lower eyelid correction
In the first few days and weeks, swelling and slight bruising (also on the sides) of the skin are normal. Overall, you should expect more swelling with lower eyelid correction than with upper eyelid correction. This also applies to the combination of both procedures. The bruising of the skin can lead to spectacle-like blue discoloration (spectacle hematoma), but this is nothing unusual.
Skin sensitivity disorders
A deterioration in skin sensation (sensitivity) is rarely complained of after lower eyelid correction.
Scarring disorders
So-called hypertrophic (bulging) scars (or, in worse cases, benign growths) are extremely rare but, as with all operations, can also occur during lower eyelid correction.
To prevent such problematic scars, we clarify during the consultation whether you have an inherited scarring disorder.
Injury to neighboring structures during lower eyelid lifting
With good knowledge and an experienced plastic surgeon, injuries to important structures are very unlikely, but cannot be completely ruled out.
Infections after an eyelid lift
The head and neck are very well supplied with blood, which is why infections are extremely rare here. If there are any warning signs, we react quickly and prescribe eye ointments containing antibiotics.
Conjunctivitis
They occur more frequently with lower eyelid correction than with upper eyelid lifting. The use of eye ointments after the operation is therefore essential.
Eyelid closure disorders
A so-called ectropion (= drooping lower eyelid) can develop on the lower eyelid if the skin is loose, the muscles are lax and the eyelid has been radically corrected. This means that the lower eyelid droops beyond the normal level. Surgical correction is unavoidable with this finding.
