Get ‘mommy’ back in ‘shape’!
The Mommy Makeover, also spelled mummy makeover, is a widely used term in the USA when referring to corrections in aesthetic plastic surgery. In German, there is as yet no adequate equivalent. One could speak of a mommy makeover, mommy makeover or mommy correction.
In addition to the plastic surgery options described on this page, the body should be brought back into shape after pregnancy, particularly through postnatal exercise, plenty of sport and a balanced diet. However, not everyone can achieve optimum results in this way, and certain changes cannot be trained away. In twin pregnancies, for example, the abdominal wall is usually so overstretched that it can only be restored by surgery. Individual connective tissue also plays an important role. Some women with ‘poor connective tissue’ cannot achieve what others naturally have, despite iron discipline. Even in severe cases, the Mommy Makeover is designed to facilitate ‘recovery’ and repair damage that cannot be repaired with exercise and diet. Now you will find a summary of surgical and non-surgical measures:
So what exactly does this ceramic correction mean?
Mommy makeover refers to various procedures with the help of which the plastic surgeon tries to restore the original state of mothers before pregnancy and breastfeeding. During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes various changes that are important for the healthy growth of the new life. Weight gain is essential during pregnancy. This should not be kept in check by dieting and exercise at all costs in order to maintain a ‘youthful figure’. In fact, many types of sport and diets are harmful to the fruit. They endanger the health of both the child and the mother. However, it is not necessary to gain 50 kg or more during pregnancy. Such weight gains also endanger the life and limb of both.
The 4 most important aspects for correction after pregnancy and breastfeeding are now summarized:
- One of the most important aspects of the Mommy Makeover is due to weight gain during pregnancy. After pregnancy and after weight normalization, excess skin and skin sagging remain, as is also the case with weight loss through dieting. In principle, different areas can be affected, so that different forms of surgical skin tightening are often performed. The abdomen is most frequently affected.
- The breast is exposed to particular stress during breastfeeding, especially after pregnancy. Weight gain causes the fatty tissue in the breast to grow. The hormonal changes cause the glandular tissue in the breast to grow. In addition, the milk let in causes the breast to swell. These three factors can cause the breast to grow by several cup sizes. After pregnancy, not only do the proportions return to normal, but the mammary gland also shrinks. As a result, the breast usually suffers the most. In medicine, this is known as breast involution or mammary involution and describes a significant sagging of the breasts together with breast shrinkage. The breast is almost always corrected as part of the mommy makeover.
- Typical changes also occur in the genital area after pregnancy, especially if it was a natural birth. In this case, the birth canals have been massively stretched. This often results in a perineal tear, which is treated differently depending on the lack of time. The result is often a greatly dilated vagina and enlarged or flaccid labia minora. The dilated vaginal wall can lead to a reduction in sexual sensation, which can have an extremely detrimental effect on your love life, especially after the difficulties of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium.
- After pregnancy and normalization of body weight, so-called residual fat deposits or residual fat pads can remain, which are diet-resistant and usually also very resistant to exercise.
Typical operations as part of a Mommy Makeover
The most common operations performed as part of the ceramic correction can be derived from the 4 points presented in the last paragraph:
- Tummy tuck surgery is one of the most common corrective procedures after pregnancy and breastfeeding. As the abdomen is severely affected by the changes, a tummy tuck is often unavoidable. However, the child has not only stretched the abdominal skin, as is the case with other weight loss procedures, but also the abdominal wall and the abdominal muscles located here. There is often a rectus diastasis caused by the lateral separation of the straight abdominal muscles. This can be stabilized again as part of the tummy tuck using internal corset-like sutures. In most cases, there is also an umbilical hernia, albeit usually a small one, which can be corrected as part of the tummy tuck. In rare cases, artificial meshes are used during umbilical hernia surgery and rectus diastasis correction to ensure additional stability. We manage without such meshes in almost all cases.
- Breast operations after pregnancy and breastfeeding in the sense of a mommy makeover are varied, as the findings can be very different, just like the result desired by the mothers. It is often a matter of tightening to shorten the overstretched skin again. Breast sagging can be normalized again with the help of a lift. The type of breast lift depends on the excess skin. In the case of severe sagging(mastoptosis), only enough skin can be removed if a T-incision, also known as an anchor incision, is performed. To stabilize the tissue, this is often combined with a technique called internal suspension or internal bra technique. Many women also want an increase in volume if their breasts have shrunk. In such cases, breast augmentation can be performed with implants and combined with a breast lift. Depending on the findings, in some cases it is possible to perform the augmentation with autologous fat. This is useful if residual fat pads are to be suctioned out anyway so that this autologous fat can be used for transplantation.
- Intimate surgery:
Both the vagina and labia can be corrected with the help of intimate correction. In women whose pregnancy ends with a natural birth, the birth canal suffers from the massive overstretching caused by the baby’s head. The tissue is particularly affected after several natural births. A severely overstretched vagina can be corrected by vaginal tightening, which benefits sexual sensation. Sagging and overstretched labia can be corrected by reducing the size of the labia. The labia minora can also be rejuvenated by injection. Even if it is not directly part of the mommy makeover, a G-spot correction or mons pubis correction can also be carried out in one session if this is desired and the findings look accordingly. - The distribution of so-called residual fat pads after pregnancy can vary greatly. Nevertheless, there are some typical areas that are corrected more frequently. This is done at the YUVEO CLINIC with effective and gentle vibration-assisted liposuction. The pads on the hips, saddlebags and inner thighs are frequently corrected. The correction of residual fat deposits in the abdominal area usually requires a tummy tuck, as there is almost always excess skin.
Further surgeries as part of the Mommy Makeover
The surgeries presented in the last chapter are the classics when it comes to mommy makeovers. However, there are other options available to get ‘mommy’ back into ‘shape’:
- The umbilical hernia has already been mentioned above under abdominoplasty. In some cases, umbilical hernia surgery is performed without a tummy tuck. In most cases, these mothers are reluctant to undergo abdominoplasty despite a sagging abdomen or do not have a lot of excess skin that needs to be corrected. The correction of an umbilical hernia is a much smaller procedure and is less restrictive for mothers postoperatively.
- Nipple reduction:
The changes to the breasts during pregnancy and especially breastfeeding described above usually result in a significant enlargement of the nipples. In some cases, these remain as large as blackberries even if they were of normal size before pregnancy. With the help of a nipple reduction, the enlarged nipples can be restored to their original size. A drooping nipple can also be corrected with a nipple lift. However, this is not necessary with a nipple reduction. - Areola reduction:
The areola is often also enlarged due to overstretching of the breast skin. In most cases, however, this does not play a role as the areolas are adjusted during a lift anyway. However, if the focus is not on breast sagging but rather on areola size, an isolated areola reduction can also be performed. The procedure also achieves a slight tightening effect. - Other tightening operations may be appropriate depending on the weight fluctuation that has taken place. As with other major weight loss procedures, a thigh lift, upper arm lift, buttock lift or body lift can be performed in addition to the abdominoplasty and breast lift mentioned above. However, these procedures are not among the typical operations performed as part of a mommy makeover but are rarely performed in this context.
- Eyelid corrections:
During pregnancy, weight is gained not only by the baby, amniotic fluid and the increase in stored fat, but also by the retention of water. The latter also causes the eyelids to swell and leads to overstretching of the eyelid skin. For this reason, the mommy makeover often includes upper eyelid correction and occasionally lower eyelid correction. Even though these are procedures on the head, eyelid corrections can be easily combined with other operations. - Injections with fillers or with Bttx A
Can the corrections be combined with each other?
Yes, in fact, as far as the Mommy Makeover is concerned, operations are more often performed in combination in one session than in one session at a time. This is because in almost all cases there are several problems at the same time. Many women therefore opt for simultaneous surgery, which has a number of advantages. As far as aftercare is concerned, the overall cost is significantly lower than if the operations are performed individually. You only have to miss work once and have to plan less vacation overall. You also only need one recovery period, which is particularly important for women who like to exercise. Another advantage is that the total cost of the procedures is usually significantly lower with simultaneous operations.
