Similar to upper eyelid drooping, in advanced stages the problem is three-layered and affects fatty tissue, skin and the eye ring muscle. This is taken into account in the lower eyelid lift.
How do we correct fatty bags under the eyes?
The classic bags under the eyes are caused by a bulge of fatty tissue that protrudes from the eye socket due to tissue relaxation.
As part of a lower eyelid lift in Düsseldorf, we remove part of this fatty tissue or relocate it. By relocating it, we can also conceal a conspicuous bony edge of the lower orbital demarcation.
What happens to the flaccid muscle?
The eye ring muscle (eye closure muscle) is also too loose in sagging lower eyelids and therefore plays a significant role in lower eyelid lifting. We remove the excess as part of the correction. To prevent the risk of the lower eyelid being pulled downwards, we fix the eye muscle on the outer area of the eye socket to the periosteum of the frontal bone.
How do we tighten the skin of the lower eyelid?
We tend to be sparing with skin removal in the lower eyelid in order to prevent the lower eyelid from pulling downwards after surgery.
In this case, our procedure mainly serves to stabilize the sagging lower eyelid.
Frequently asked questions about tightening the lower eyelid
What is the general procedure for a lower eyelid lift?
At Yuveo, we can perform lower eyelid correction on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia.
Compared to the upper eyelid lift for drooping eyelids, the lower eyelid lift is somewhat more complex. We therefore recommend sedation (twilight sleep) in addition to local anesthesia for greater comfort.
The procedure takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
We mark the incision line before the lower eyelid correction. It runs directly under the lash line. The scar is barely visible afterwards, even from a short distance.
At the end of the operation, we close the wound with a very fine suture. Finally, the entire lower eyelid is taped with stabilizing adhesive plaster to keep swelling to a minimum.
The plaster is not removed until the stitches are removed at the Yuveo Clinic Düsseldorf.
How do we perform a small lower eyelid lift?
In some cases, we can perform the small form of lower eyelid lifting, i.e. fat removal via a conjunctival incision.
Bags under the eyes are formed relatively early, while the skin and muscles are still firm.
The orbital fatty tissue is already bulging out, resulting in a tired, sad look.
In these cases, the problem can be resolved with a minor procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia. We make a small 0.5 to 1 cm incision on the inside of the lower eyelid in the area of the conjunctiva. We then remove the fatty tissue protruding from the eye socket.
Suturing is usually not necessary, as the conjunctival edges will close on their own without tension.
The healing process after this procedure is less noticeable than after the usual lower eyelid lift.
How is the operation performed for extreme bags under the eyes?
If the bags under the eyes are extremely pronounced and/or the skin is very thick (usually in men), it is necessary to remove the excess skin, fat and muscle. This means that the scar is not located in the shadow of the eyelashes, but directly on the lower eyelid or even in the upper cheek area.
However, even in this area, the scars are barely visible when well sutured – and much less noticeable than the bags under the eyes.
What is the aftercare for lower eyelid correction?
In the first few days after a lower eyelid correction, frequent cooling leads to less swelling and accelerates wound healing.
An elevated position of the head when sleeping is recommended for the same reason.
The suture material can be removed after approx. one week.
But even after the stitches have been removed, the eye should not be rubbed for another week.
How much does a lower eyelid lift cost?
The costs of a lower eyelid lift are variable. The following factors play an important role:
- The extent of the lower eyelid lift
- The length of the hospital stay
- The costs for general anesthesia or sedation
- The plastic surgeon’s fee
The average cost in Germany is around 1500 to 3500 euros. This usually includes sedation and sometimes a short inpatient stay. You have to calculate prices of 200 to 400 euros for twilight sleep and 300 to 900 euros for the hospital stay.
If only a lower eyelid correction of the bags under the eyes is performed without an actual lower eyelid lift by removing fatty tissue from the conjunctiva, the costs are somewhat lower (1000 to 2000 euros).
